Scottish Endurance Riding Club – Highland fling – Ardross – 16th October 2011

Last week end was my first ride up in the Highlands. Unfortunately I didn’t have use of a lorry at the week end so leaving home this time were only Oscar and I but joined by Edward riding Elle whom were doing their first pleasure ride together.

What a fantastic day it was, everybody was so friendly and really went out of their way to come over to talk (although they possibly were more interested in talking to Oscar than me).  All of the helpers and riders made the experience such a very good one!

22 kilometres of predominantly forestry tracks and simply stunning views, it was such a good route and very well planned to test horse and rider. Oscar really enjoyed himself, he put his heart into the ride and was eager to find the other horses on the route, although I have to admit that it wasn’t so much fun when he wanted to canter down a very steep grassy slope in pursuit of an arab gelding! I had asked him to walk down the hill and in protest he was cantering virtually on the spot, makes life more interesting though I suppose! Elle was fantastic as well, her first long distance ride and she was such a star, always such a willing and enthusiastic girl so well suited to endurance. Oscar and Elle are very well matched in stride and stamina so we travelled along at quite a speed in the trot. We were going to finish too early so had to stop for 5 minutes and then walk home for the final part.

I had been looking forward to riding up north for a long time as is where endurance began in Scotland and where the Highland Long Distance Riding Club was founded in 1982. It was lovely to see and have the opportunity to ride in such a breathtakingly beautiful part of the country. Thank you to everyone involved in organising and helping to make it such an enjoyable day! I would love to ride up in the Highlands again.

Unfortunately I didn’t have the camera on the day but pictures are on the SERC-highland branch website.
